Armenian defense minister underscores ICRC's mission in Artsakh
YEREVAN, November 28. /ARКА/. Armenian Defense Minister Vagharshak Harutyunyan received on Saturday the head of  the International Committee of the Red Cross's Delegation (ICRC) to Armenia Claire Meytraud on the occasion of the completion of her mission, as well as the newly appointed head of the Delegation Thierry Ribot.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Defense, during the meeting, Harutyunyan stated that the Armenian side attaches great importance to the mediation of the Russian peacekeeping contingent and the ICRC delegation in recovering the bodies of servicemen who died during the fighting on the Artsakh-Azerbaijan line of contact, as well as the search for missing and wounded persons, clarification of the fate of the captured military personnel and civilians and their further exchange.

Harutyunyan highly appreciated the activities of  Claire Meytraud during her tenure and wished the newly appointed head of the ICRC delegation Thierry Ribot fruitful work in Armenia.

The head of the ICRC office in Yerevan congratulated Harutyunyan on assuming the post of defense minister and assured that the ICRC Delegation to Armenia, within the framework of its powers, will continue its mediation mission.

Earlier, ICRC President Peter Maurer said that one of the urgent tasks of the organization's mission in the Karabakh region was the search and identification of the bodies of the killed soldiers. The difficulty lies in working on the front line itself, where the territory is mined.

According to Maurer, if this work is delayed, "the most unpleasant consequences" are possible, for example - soil contamination and difficulties in identifying bodies.

About a month ago, the Armenian Ministry of Environment warned that Nagorno-Karabakh was threatened with a humanitarian and environmental disaster due to the dead bodies of soldiers killed in the fighting.

From September 27 to November 9,  Azerbaijani armed forces, backed by  Turkey and foreign mercenaries and terrorists, attacked Nagorno-Karabakh along the entire  front line using rocket and artillery weapons, heavy armored vehicles, military aircraft and prohibited types of weapons such as cluster bombs and  phosphorus weapons.

On November 9, the leaders of the Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a statement on the cessation of all hostilities in Artsakh. According to the document, the parties stopped at where they were at that time. The town of Shushi, the districts of Agdam, Kelbajar and Lachin are handed over to Azerbaijan, with the exception of a 5-kilometer corridor connecting Karabakh with Armenia.

A Russian peacekeeping contingent has been deployed along the contact line in Karabakh and along the Lachin corridor. Internally displaced persons and refugees are returning to Karabakh and adjacent regions, prisoners of war, hostages and other detained persons and bodies of the dead are being exchanged..--0-
