Armenian human rights defender says checkpoint on Yerevan-Kapan highway, set up by Azerbaijan is illegal and must be dismantled

YEREVAN, September 14. /ARKA/. Armenian human rights defender Arman Tatoyan deplored Azerbaijani authorities for setting up a checkpoint on a section of a strategic road that connects Armenia with Iran.

Tatoyan said in a Facebook post that the checkpoint, the barriers and cameras installed by Azerbaijanis near the village of Vorotan in south-eastern Armenian province of Syunik are illegal and must be dismantled.

Armenian forces had pulled out of that road section after the end of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh last autumn. The Armenian authorities said that section is located on the Azerbaijani side of Armenia’s Soviet-era border with Azerbaijan.

Now Azerbaijani forces control a 21-kilometer stretch of the highway that connects Kapan, the capital of Syunik, to the second-largest provincial town of Goris. The other parts of the highway, which is Armenia’s sole transport link with Iran are patrolled by Russian soldiers and border guards.

According to Tatoyan, the Azerbaijani side has installed 10 video cameras, 8 of which control the road, record the movements of the civilian population, the faces of drivers and passengers. Tatoyan stressed that in fact, it is collection of personal data of citizens in gross violation of international rules for their protection.

Tatoyan said at least 4 armed Azerbaijani servicemen, whose faces are constantly hidden by masks, are deployed at the checkpoint. He added that their equipment is blatantly terrorizing, given that it is a road that connects communities, which is used mainly by civilians.

Tatoyan said that Azerbaijanis are stopping and taxing Iranian commercial trucks without legal grounds.

According to some Iranian truck drivers, Azerbaijanis pose as Armenians.

Tatoyan said he has the UN, OSCE, CE and other international organizations about this situation. -0-
