YEREVAN, September 8. /ARKA/. "I decided to resign and give the president an opportunity to form a new government," Armenian prime minister Hovik Abrahamyan said after announcing his resignation at a government meeting today. He explained his decision by the need for new approaches to govern the country.

Abrahamyan said that since his appointment as head of the government he made every effort to solve the urgent problems, which cause the dissatisfaction of the citizens.

Expressing his gratitude to all the ministers of the government, Abrahamyan said that he would continue to work with members of the new government, as he is going to stay in the active politics.

Hovik Abrahamyan was appointed head of the Armenian government in April 2014.

Reports in the local media named Karen Karapetyan as a likely successor. Karapetyan is a technocrat and former mayor of Yerevan. Before that he served as the head of a national gas distributing company. His latest job was a senior position in one of Russia’s largest commercial banks Gazprombank.-0-
