Armenian tycoon charged with March 1 disorders to run for parliament

YEREVAN, March 6. /ARKA/. A wealthy Armenian businessman Khachatur Sukiasyan, who was charged with organizing «mass disturbances" in Yerevan in the wake of 2008 presidential election, said officially he will contest the May 6 parliamentary elections in a single-mandate constituency in central Yerevan.
The tycoon, who strongly supported former president Levon Ter-Petrosian in the February 2008 presidential election, spent about 18 months in hiding to avoid prosecution on what he considered trumped-up and politically motivated accusations. He was set free after surrendering to law-enforcement authorities and signing a pledge not to leave Yerevan.
After he voluntarily renounced his parliamentary mandate, a by-election was held and an Ara Simonyan from the national Unity party was elected to parliament. Sukiasian was a parliament member in 2003-2007 and was re-elected in the 2007 polls from the same constituency. -0-
