YEREVAN, May 12. / ARKA /. Azerbaijan will soon be forced to cut its defense spending because of the devaluation of its national currency, the manat, Aidar Kurtov, an expert from the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies, said today, Novosti-Armenia reported.
Asked whether this will affect the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the expert said it will, but not dramatically. He said Azerbaijan’s excessive arms purchases have created the illusion of technical superiority.
"In Baku they are fond of comparing Azerbaijan’s total defense spending with Armenia’s overall budget, but everyone knows that a large army and a lot of weapons are not guarantees of wining a war. We know from history that wars are not always won by the one who has more weapons…," he added.
Speaking about the situation in connection with the devaluation of the manat, the expert stressed that it came as a shock for Azerbaijani.
"The devaluation of the national currency is unpleasant, especially when it occurs suddenly, after many years of tales about sustainable economic abundance. It was a shock for the population, but I think the authorities will prevent this theme from being exploited by the opposition,’ he added.- 0-
