He is the first president elected by the country’s parliament.
In accordance with the constitutional reforms approved by Armenia in 2015, the country is carrying out transition from presidential to parliamentary rule.
The newly elected president, Armen Sargsyan, will take office on April 9. On the same day, Serzh Sargsyan, the current president, will quit the office and the Cabinet ministers will resign.
The prime minister will be elected by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia on April 17.
Sarkissian has been nominated by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation/Dashnaktsutiun and supported by Tsarukyan bloc.
All the nine MPs from opposition YELQ bloc voted against the candidature.
