YEREVAN, June 5, /ARKA/. On the occasion of Constitution Day, marked in Armenia on July 5, president Serzh Sargsyan , addressed a congratulatory message, which reads as follows:  dear compatriots, I congratulate you on the occasion of Constitution Day.  This is an important and historic day for our country and our people. Together, we are traveling step by step down the road which leads us towards the implementation of the goals enshrined in the Constitution.

The latest constitutional reforms have proved once again that our sovereign, democratic, legal, and social state has matured; the reforms have also highlighted tendencies for our country’s upward and sustainable development. The altered version of the Constitution makes us as a society freer and stronger. At the same time, the new reality requires a responsible attitude from all of us towards the ongoing social, legal, and political processes.

I once again extend my congratulations on the occasion of this great holiday and wish that we live and work according to the letter and spirit of our Main Law.’

Armenia's Constitution was adopted in a referendum on 5th of July 1995. It was reformed twice - in 2005 and 2015. Under the first reform part of presidential powers were handed to other state bodies. The amendments increased also the role of the National Assembly - the parliament of Armenia.

The Constitution was reformed dramatically in a 2015 referendum held on 6th of  December. The reformed constitution provides for a transition from the current semi-presidential to a parliamentary form of government. Under the new Constitution, the President of Armenia, whose powers will be significantly curtailed, is to be elected for a term of seven years (instead of the current five) by the parliament. One and the same person can be elected president only once .--
