Tigran Avinian, the only candidate, nominated by the Civil Contract party, was elected today Mayor of Yerevan by the Council of Elders (municipal assembly).

YEREVAN, October 10. /ARKA/. Tigran Avinian, the only candidate, nominated by the Civil Contract party, was elected today Mayor of Yerevan by the Council of Elders (municipal assembly).

Thirty-two members of the 65-member Council of Elders voted "in favor", 5 voted "against". The opposition National Progress party and Mother Armenia bloc, boycotted the session and did not take part in the voting.

The elections to the Council of Elders were held on September 17. The Civil Contract party won 24 seats, the National Progress party - 14, the Mother Armenia bloc - 12, the Hanrapetutyun party - 8 and the Public Voice - 7 seats.. -0-
