YEREVAN, September 14. /ARKA/. The European Union welcomed an anti-fraud agreement signed by representatives of Armenia’s government and three major opposition parties- the Armenian National Congress (HAK), the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) and the Orinats Yerkir (Country of Law) - aimed at preventing possible fraud in next year’s parliamentary elections.

In a statement the European Union said that ‘the signature of the new political agreement on electoral reform in the Republic of Armenia between the Government coalition and opposition parties, and consultations with civil society representatives is a positive development supporting the implementation of electoral reform in the country.’

‘The European Union's financial assistance, together with that of other international partners and the engagement of the Government, will enable the implementation of the technical aspects defined by the new Electoral Code of the Republic of Armenia.

The electoral stakeholders in Armenia should now fully implement the new electoral legislation in good faith in order to increase credibility, transparency and public trust in the new electoral system and procedures in line with international standards.’

The agreement stipulates publication of the names of those voters that have cast ballots, according to official protocols, to prevent multiple voting by government supporters. Opposition parties say this will enable them to verify whether those voters actually live in Armenia.

The government also agreed to ensure live online broadcasts of voting and ballot counting in about 2,000 polling stations across the country. -0-
