YEREVAN, April 15. / ARKA /. The European Parliament is debating now a draft resolution on declaring April 24 as the Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide across the European Union.
The draft resolution calls on all member states of the European Union to adopt documents recognizing and condemning the Armenian genocide.
The importance of the adoption of the resolution was stressed by the vice-president of the European Parliament Ulrike Lunacek.
Actually all speakers defended the adoption of the resolution noting its importance ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
The European Parliament officially recognized the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey in 1987. Its second resolution of 13 March 2015 called on EU member states to recognize the Armenian Genocide.
The vote in Brussels is taking place against a backdrop of growing tensions between Ankara and the international community over the characterization of the 1915 tragedy ahead of April 24, marked as the Armenian Genocide Day.
“Whatever decision the European Parliament takes on Armenian genocide claims, it would go in one ear and out the other,” Turkish Erdogan told a news conference at Ankara airport before departing on an official visit to Kazakhstan.
The resolution in parliament calls on Turkey to "recognize the Armenian Genocide and thus to pave the way for a genuine reconciliation between the Turkish and Armenian people."
The vote comes just days after Pope Francis publicly called the killing of Armenians as “genocide” on Sunday, prompting Turkey to summon the Vatican's ambassador and recall its own. -0-
