Europeans realize that Armenia has certain problems and cannot be asked to make unambiguous foreign policy choice, political analyst Gevorg Melikyan said on Sputnik-Armenia radio channel on Friday.
YEREVAN, May 25. /ARKA/. Europeans realize that Armenia has certain problems and cannot be asked to make unambiguous foreign policy choice, political analyst Gevorg Melikyan said on Sputnik-Armenia radio channel on Friday.
Today Armenia’s policy is rather balanced than complementary, according to the analyst.
Armenia continues its relationship with the EU, and Europeans realize there should not be categorical approach to the countries with various geopolitical problems, he said. The Ukrainian crisis shows more balanced decisions should be made, as compared to political romanticism before, the expert said.
Ukraine’s, Georgia’s and Moldova’s wish to join the EU rather contains a political component than is based on economic conditions, Melikyan said.
“Why, for instance, Baltic states were admitted to the EU so quickly? Because there was a political need to pull them out of the Russian orbit. But no such an objective is set for Georgia and Ukraine today. This process will be easier for Moldova, but still, Russia’s interests need to be taken into account while making a political decision,” Melikyan said, as cited by Novosti-Armenia.
Today Europeans should decide on a concept to meet the new challenges and to avoid future problems with countries that have not signed association agreements and are not planning to become EU members, the expert said. –0--
