Russia's sluggish information presence at Armenia's market leads to problems, including those connected with the pursued policy and anti-Russian sentiments, Sergey Markedonov, director of the Department for Problems of Ethnic Relations at the Institute for Political and Military Analysis in Moscow, is quoted by Novosti-Armenia as saying Tuesday at 'Media Image of Eurasian Integration' discussion held as part of the first session of the Young Intellectuals Club of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
YEREVAN, March 1. /ARKA/.
In his words, Russia boosts its interests at Armenia's market quite weakly. He pointed out looking to the past as the major fault in Russia's information policy. He finds it wrong, especially taking into account the fact that there are no nostalgic sentiments in many of post-Soviet countries, and this strikes at Russia's interests.
«If such a nostalgic policy produces effect in Russia, it produces no results in other post-Soviet countries, such as Armenia and Kazakhstan,» Markedonov said. «It is wrong to sell a domestic PR to an outside market and to think that it will work there. It is necessary to understand things – they are different and they demand different skills. And it is necessary to reverse everything nostalgic and actualize a forward-looking information policy.»
The political analyst stressed the regional policy coordination necessity. He said all the current processes should be taken into account in the coordination.
In his opinion, Russia's opponency-based propaganda very often looks as grotesque arousing certain problems. It should be changed, he said.
In particular, Markedonov proposes to concentrate Russian propaganda on interesting to Armenia matters – maintenance of status quo in Karabakh, armament sales and Turkey containment policy.
«These trends, not memories about how it was good to live in the Soviet Union, are interesting to Armenian society,» he said. «I think Russia should understand that and pay a greater attention to quality of relations with Armenia.»
Members of the Young Intellectuals' Club gathered in Yerevan today for their first meeting. The aim of the project is to provide a platform for professional discussions to young humanitarian specialists from CIS countries.
The round-table discussion 'Education in the Commonwealth Countries – Problems, Priorities and Prospects' is being held as part of the program dedicated to the Education Year declared at the CIS summit.

The session is being held with the support provided by the CIS Interstate Humanitarian Cooperation Fund, the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University and Russian-Armenian Youth Unity NGO. ---0----
