Fourth Armenian president to be sworn in on Monday

Armenia is making necessary preparations for the ceremony of the inauguration of the fourth president, Armen Sarkissian.

YEREVAN, April 9. /ARKA/. Armenia is making necessary preparations for the ceremony of the inauguration of the fourth president, Armen Sarkissian.
He is the first president elected by the country’s parliament.
In accordance with the constitutional reforms approved by Armenia in 2015, the country is carrying out transition from presidential to parliamentary rule.
The newly elected president, Armen Sargsyan, will take office on April 9. On the same day, Serzh Sargsyan, the current president, will quit the office and the Cabinet ministers will resign.
The prime minister will be elected by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia on April 17.
Sarkissian has been nominated by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia and the Armenian
Revolutionary Federation/Dashnaktsutiun and supported by Tsarukyan bloc.
YELQ opposition bloc voted against the candidature.
The constitutional reforms implemented in Armenia' in 2015 have laid groundwork for the country’s transition from presidential to parliamentary rule.
Serzh Sargsyan, Armenia’s present president, will stay in office until expiration of his second term and will be nominated by his party for the prime-ministerial seat.
The new president will take up office on April 9, 2018, and the government will be dismissed on the same day.
Armen Sarkissian was born on June 23, 1953.
In 1976, he graduated from the Yerevan State University and got PhD degree in physics and mathematics upon completing his post-graduate curriculum.
He has worked at the Yerevan State University and at Cambridge University as professor.
In 1992, he was dispatched to the United Kingdom as ambassador.
Sarkissian has also been on diplomatic missions in Belgium, the Netherlands, Vatican and Luxembourg.
From November 1, 1996 to February 28, 1997, he was Armenian prime minister, and after that was appointed as ambassador to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.
Over a period between 1993 and 2000 he has been a special consultant to the head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, then, in 2000, he was the chairman founder of Eurasia House International, in 2001 to 2011 he was founder and director of the Eurasian Center in the Cambridge University’s Judge School and founder of Astana annual Eurasian media forum.
From 2001 to 2013 worked as chief advisor at British Petrolium, Alcatel, Telefonica, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and other international organizations.
Sarkissian enjoys membership in many international organizations.
In 1997, he received St. Gregory the Great Order from Pope John Paul II.
In 2008, he received St. Gregory the Illuminator medal from Catholicos Garegin II, Armenian Apostolic Church leader.
Sarkissian has also the first-degree Order for Merits for the Motherland. Non partisan. Father of two. -0---
