YEREVAN, September 1. /ARКА/. The European Union will persist with its monitoring mission in Armenia as per its mandate, and no alterations are necessary at this time. Vasilis Maragos, the Head of the European Delegation to Armenia, conveyed this to Azatutyun Radio when asked if the matter of withdrawing third forces from the border was raised after the initialing of the peace agreement between Yerevan and Baku.

"To my knowledge, the citizens and officials of Armenia appreciate the EU mission in Armenia. It continues its operations. Should there be a need for any modifications, we will engage in discussions with our member states and, naturally, with the Armenian authorities. However, at this moment, I wish to reassure the Armenian public that the EU mission will persist in executing its duties in line with its mandate," stated the EU Ambassador.

He responded to an inquiry regarding whether any discussions took place after the initialing of the agreement in Washington.

"I must emphasize that the European Union Mission to Armenia is present at the request of the Armenian authorities and will remain here for as long as required. It serves as a tool for peace and resolution. We are fully committed to supporting it," Maragos remarked.

Five months after reaching an agreement on the text of the peace treaty, Armenia and Azerbaijan initialed it in Washington on August 8. The agreement stipulates that Yerevan and Baku will refrain from deploying any third-party forces along their shared border.
