Iskandaryan considers Azerbaijan’s assaults as very strong action, not full-scale war

Azerbaijani troops undertook massive offensives Friday night on south-eastern and north-eastern sections of the Karabakh-Azerbaijan contact line with using artillery, armored vehicles and air forces.
Karabakh troops shot down an Azerbaijani military helicopter, and Azerbaijanis withdrew with taking a heavy toll.
“The information coming now from Karabakh gives no grounds for considering this as the beginning of a full-scale war,” Iskandaryan said in his interview.
In his opinion, had Azerbaijanis wanted to start a war they would have undertaken frontal assaults in depth along the full length of the contact line.
Iskandaryan said that Serzh Sargsyan, Armenian president, speaking in Washington, called Azerbaijan and Turkey’s stance destructive, and immediately after that Azerbaijan confirms this statement by carrying out military attacks.
“It could be presumed that a large-scale war is launched in such an incompetent way, but I think that this is rather another, but a very strong action in terms of confrontation degree,” he said. “If so, it is clear that the attacks were carried out at an instruction that presumably came from Aliev from Washington because of some problems he faced there.”
The political analyst finds it necessary to watch closely the developments, stressing that if his speculations are correct and this is not the beginning of a war, it means that the instruction to launch military assaults was issued on a national level.
In his words, the Karabakh side responded properly to the attacks inflicting heavy casualties to Azerbaijan.
”I don’t think that Karabakh conflict settlement had any prospects also before that, but Azerbaijan is narrowing its own opportunities by such actions,” Iskandaryan said adding that this action will necessarily be followed by OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs’ statements. ---0----
