STEPANAKERT, October 15. / ARKA /. Nagorno-Karabakh ministry of defense accused today the Azerbaijani side of another violation of the ceasefire saying in a statement that Azerbaijani troops used snipes and infantry weapons to fire on Karabakh defense army’s positions on October 14 and October 15 overnight.

It said the advanced units of the defense army respected the ceasefire shifting to preventive steps in case of emergency.

Earlier this week Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova urged the parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to renounce the use of force and to show political will to reach a compromise.

“Unfortunately, the renewal of political dialogue gets more complicated because of escalation of situation in the conflict zone, increased number of victims, including civilians,” she said, adding that “further escalation is simply inadmissible.”

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group, co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France, has been mediating the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict since 1992.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict erupted into armed clashes after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s as the predominantly Armenian-populated enclave of Azerbaijan sought to secede from Azerbaijan and declared its independence backed by a successful referendum. A truce was brokered by Russia in 1994, although no permanent peace agreement has been signed.

Since then, Nagorno-Karabakh and several adjacent regions have been under the control of Armenian forces of Karabakh. Nagorno-Karabakh is the longest-running post-Soviet era conflict and has continued to simmer despite the relative peace of the past two decades, with snipers causing tens of deaths a year. –0 –
