YEREVAN, January 21. /ARKA/. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan spoke at a press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov about the draft law proposing the initiation of Armenia's accession process to the EU.

"Firstly, the draft law is a public document, and I think that you can take a look at it. It does not mention any deadlines or specific mechanisms. I would like to remind you that this is a civil society initiative; the organizations have collected the necessary 50,000 votes as prescribed by the Constitution. This initiative has now automatically turned into a draft law and will be submitted for a vote in parliament. The government has approved the draft law, and it is expected that the ruling majority will vote 'for,'" Mirzoyan said.

He added that after that, it will be clear what steps to take next. "This law does not propose anything beyond that," Mirzoyan said.

Regarding the contradiction between membership in the EU and the EAEU, the minister stated that it is not for him to judge the issue.

"I cannot invent anything new here. If the question arises in this way, we will probably have to assess it," Mirzoyan remarked.

On the launch of the process of Armenia's accession to the EU

On January 9, the Armenian government approved the project for Armenia's accession to the EU, proposed by the civil initiative "Platform of Democratic Forces." As Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted, Armenia can only become an EU member if the people approve the initiative through a referendum. He emphasized the necessity of discussing and developing a joint "road map" with the EU.
