Opposition activists clash with police in Armenian capital

Opposition activists, led by Nikol Pashinyan, the head of Yelk parliamentary bloc, clashed minutes ago with riot police on Baghramyan Avenue in the Armenian capital Yerevan, several hundreds meters away from the parliament building.

YEREVAN, April 16. /ARKA/. Opposition activists, led by Nikol Pashinyan, the head of Yelk parliamentary bloc, clashed minutes ago with riot police on Baghramyan Avenue in the Armenian capital Yerevan, several hundreds meters away from the parliament building.
Thousands of opposition supporters have been protesting since April 13 evening against ex-president Serzh Sargsyan’s plan to be elected as prime minister on April 17. Sargsyan served as president from 2008 until April 9 when he stepped down because of term limits.
The opposition activists are building barricades with trash bins and benches. Many of the protesters raise their hands, demonstrating that they are unarmed. The police put up shields and held out barbed wire trying not to let protesters move towards the parliament building. Police are pulling new forces to the scene.
Several protesters have been injured. According to some sources, Nikol Pashinyan was rushed to a hospital by a police car after receiving injuries in the face.-0-
