YEREVAN, September 13. /ARKA/. The US co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick announced plans of international peace brokers to organize another meeting of the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan on the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement.
In an interview with Russian news agency Interfax he said the Minsk Group co-chairs want to continue the work on existing proposals to find common ground between the presidents and finally reach a peaceful settlement of the conflict, which has lasted for more than 20 years.
"We hope that these talks will lead to a peaceful settlement. And the good news is that we have not seen an upsurge in violence along the line of contact after the last April "four-day war" with ceasefire regime being more or less observed. This is the atmosphere in which we can make progress in the talks, "- said the US diplomat.
Warlick said: "We want a new meeting between the presidents, but there is no clarity with respect to time or venue. As co-chairs, we will meet with the foreign ministers of both countries to lay the groundwork for the next summit."
Warlick also listed the main conditions for the settlement of the Karabakh problem saying that the conflict supposes the return of some territories to Azerbaijani control, in exchange for the status of Nagorno-Karabakh to be determined. Warlick added that this was one of many conditions being imposed that include the return of refugees to their homes, and the deployment of international peacekeeping forces at the conflict zone.
He said the mediators need to work with the parties to find a way to combine all of these conditions and to reach a peaceful settlement that will benefit the residents of the region.
He recalled that not so long ago Armenians and Azerbaijanis lived side by side in peace and harmony. "Now those days are gone. Sad but true that the new generation of Armenians and Azerbaijanis has grown not knowing one another… We would like to see contacts between the peoples. We would like to see Armenians and Azeris co-exist together. I believe that there are many people both in Armenia and Azerbaijan who are ready for it ", the co-chair said. -0-
