Over 10,000 draft dodgers in Armenia: Alen Simonyan on the new bill
YEREVAN, May 27. /ARKA/. There are over 10,000 people wanted for draft dodge in Armenia, said RA National Assembly Chairman Alen Simonyan.

“Those people who tried to free their children from the army with money did it, the fight against all this was and is being carried out, I don’t want to go into the bill itself, which needs to be discussed,” Simonyan said at a briefing on Tuesday.

Simonyan said that “our goal is to have a professional army, where those who wish to dedicate their lives to the army will receive a high salary and become servicemen.”

On May 22, 2025, the Armenian government approved a bill that provides for the reduction of the term of compulsory military service in the Armenian Armed Forces from the current 2 years to 1 or 6 months in exchange for payment.

The legislative package, developed on January 16, 2024, provides for amendments to the laws "On Military Service and the Status of a Serviceman", "On State Duty" and the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia.

"It is proposed to establish the possibility of completing compulsory military service for a period of less than 24 months, with a payment of 20 million drams to the state budget for service for 1 month, 15 million drams - for six months," said RA Defense Minister Suren Papikyan. -0--
