"I think it will be very difficult for us if such a situation arise," Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan said when asked if new security problems would arise if the Civil Contract party of PM Pashinyan failed to win 50%+ votes in the Yerevan Council of Elders elections. .

"Every time, not only accumulating troops, but also attacking our positions, borders, invading our territory, Azerbaijan tries to impose something on us. The leader of that country speaks about it openly, actually admitting such illegal actions," Simonyan told reporters.

However, the speaker noted, as long as the people support the authorities, "we are firm in the negotiation process".

Thirteen political parties and one bloc are contesting in the elections. The party or the bloc that wins the election will nominate a candidate for the post of mayor.

The latest public opinion call conducted by the Armenian Office of Gallup International Association shows that that 22.5% of respondents in the capital Yerevan are going to vote for Civil Contract Party’s mayoral candidate Tigran Avinyan.

Another 14.3% plan to vote for Hayk Marutyan, the candidate of the National Advancement party, who already served as mayor of Yerevan. Also, 7.8% are ready to vote for the candidate from Mother Armenia bloc Andranik Tevanyan.

The outgoing Council of Elders was elected on October 10, 2018. Its term expires on October 10, 2023. --0--
