Pashinyan: Azerbaijan looking for excuse to launch another attack on Armenia

YEREVAN, October 18, /ARKA/. ‘Azerbaijan is continuously attributing its own ceasefire violations to Armenia. Obviously, this is a creation of a pretext for new military aggression against Armenia. A permanent international mechanism is needed to maintain the ceasefire regime and provide border security,’ Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan tweeted on Monday.

Pashinyan’s tweet comes after deployment of more Armenian soldiers and artillery in the direction of Vardenis in response to an Azerbaijani military build-up in the same area.

Azerbaijani Defense Ministry retaliated in a statement saying that that could lead to another upsurge in violence.

The Armenian Defense Ministry said its steps have a solely defensive nature. It added that it will pull back the reinforcements if the Azerbaijani military does the same.

In related news European Council President Charles Michel welcomed rapid deployment of European Union’s monitoring capacity in Armenia along its international border with Azerbaijan following October 6 meeting with Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders and French President Macron in Prague.

‘We whelp build confidence & allow EU to better support border commissions which will convene shortly in Brussels,’ Michel tweeted.

European Union foreign ministers approved on Monday the deployment of up to 40 EU monitors to Armenia’s border with Azerbaijan “to facilitate the restoration of peace and security in the area, the building of confidence and the delimitation of the international border between the two states.”

“This is another proof of the EU’s full commitment to contributing to the ultimate goal of achieving sustainable peace in the South Caucasus,” said Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign and security policy chief in a statement.-0-
