YEREVAN, October 25. / ARKA /. Naira Zohrabyan, a parliament member from the Prosperous Armenia party, said her party will vote against a government-submitted bill calling for a drastic increase in the salaries of high-level state officials, including president Serzh Sargsyan.
The bill designed for the head of state, government ministers, senior law-enforcement officials as well as parliament deputies, if passed would triple the monthly salaries of the president, prime minister and parliament speaker. The president, for example, would get 1.3 million drams ($3,260) a month.
"The government would have a moral right to submit such a bill if it had fulfilled its promises, for example, to create new businesses and new jobs. The bill speaks only of the inadequacy of the Armenian political elite and this why our party will definitely vote against it,” Zohrabyan said.
The bill was condemned by opposition lawmakers who said the political leaders have no moral right to earn much more without increasing other public sector salaries, pensions and social security benefits. -0-
