Riga Summit indicates fragmentation in the post-Soviet area - Russian analyst
YEREVAN, May 29. /ARKA/. Riga Eastern Partnership Summit, in a different way but still like Vilnius summit, has demonstrated that the post-Soviet area is being fragmented, well-known Russian political analyst and head of regional studies and foreign policy at the Russian State Humanitarian University Sergey Markedonov said on Sputnik-Armenia radio channel.

It is an outcome of key importance in a big process, the analyst said.

“Having started well before the summits in Vilnius and Riga, this process continued through the last years when it became clear, particularly after the Ukrainian crisis, that the post-Soviet area is in certain specialization stage,” Markedonov said, as cited by Novosti-Armenia.

Part of the countries believe they will feel better being with the West, another part prefers building up its cooperation with Russia, a third part, like Azerbaijan, leans towards a seesaw policy depending on sectors and segments of interest, according to the analyst.

There are countries beyond the Caucasus also preferring to disassociate themselves from any integration projects, for instance Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, Markedonov said. This is how the specialization takes place requiring all of the actors of the big political game to adapt, according to the analyst.

Riga Summit was held on May 21-22 in the framework of the EU Eastern Partnership program covering Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus. –0--
