Shoigu has emergency phone talks with Armenian and Azerbaijani counterparts over escalation of tension in Karabakh

Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu had emergency phone talks today with his counterparts from Armenia and Azerbaijan Seyran Ohanyan and Zakir Hasanov on the immediate measures to stabilize the situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone.

YEREVAN, April 2. /ARKA/.  Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu had emergency phone talks today with his counterparts from Armenia and Azerbaijan Seyran Ohanyan and Zakir Hasanov on the immediate measures to stabilize the situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone. 

"In light of the latest developments, on April 2, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu held telephone talks with his colleagues, Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan and Azerbaijani Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov, on the necessity of urgent measures to stabilize the situation in the conflict zone," the Russian defense ministry said in a statement.

Armenian military authorities accused today Azerbaijani forces of launching a major offensive, involving tanks, heavy artillery and helicopter gunships in the early hours of April 2. The Armenian ministry of defense said there were "casualties on both sides."

Nagorno-Karabakh's defense ministry said they have shot down two military helicopters and destroyed also three battle tanks and two drones.

Russia's president Vladimir Putin's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, said Putin was  "deeply concerned about the reports on resumed military actions along the line of engagement in Nagorno-Karabakh"  and called on the parties to the conflict to implement an immediate cease-fire and to exercise restraint. -0-
