YEREVAN, September 8. /ARKA/. Some 55.3% of Yerevan residents will definitely go to the polls on September 17 to elect a new Council of Elders (municipal assembly), according to the findings of a public opinion poll conducted by the Armenian office of GALLUP International Association.

Armenia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) has registered 13 political parties and 1 bloc to participate in the polls. The winning party will nominate a candidate for the post of mayor of Yerevan.

Some 14.5% said they "most likely" will participate, 7.8% said they "most likely won't go to the polls", and 9.3% will definitely not participate. At the same time, 3.3% found it difficult to give an answer to this question.

"Based on my experience, I would say that those who find it difficult to answer will definitely not go to the polls and in addition to that, also based on experience, people who said they will probably go, also usually find more important things to do on election day," said Aram Navasardyan, head of the Armenian office of GALLUP International Association.

Some 16.3% of the respondents said they would vote for the Civil Contract party of PM Pashinyan, about 12% would vote for the National Progress party and 5.1% for Mother Armenia bloc.

The telephone survey, conducted Sept. 5-6 in Yerevan, involved 800 respondents. -0-
