YEREVAN, April 11. /ARKA/. The Russian GeoProMining Gold company said it had to suspend the operation of Sotk gold mine in Armenia's Gegharkunik province today because of safety concerns.

GeoProMining Gold told ARKA news agency that at about 17:15 an exchange of fire between Azerbaijani and Armenian soldiers began.

'We were forced to stop the operation of the deposit and evacuate all the personnel. At the moment, the mine is not working, 'the company said.

Armenian media reports said Azerbaijani forces were firing in the direction of Sotk community of Gegharkunik region.

GeoProMining Group is one of the biggest investors in Armenia and has been working in the country for 15 years. The group's Armenian assets consist of Sotk gold mine, the Ararat gold recovery plant and the Agarak copper-molybdenum combine. -0-
