YEREVAN, August 5. /ARKA/. A team of 48 interrogators is engaged in the preliminary investigation of a criminal case involving the seizure of a police station building in Armenia's capital city Yerevan by a group of armed men on July 17, the Special Investigation Service (SIS) said today.

A total of 44 persons are involved in this case as defendants and another two as suspects. Forty-two persons have been arrested and another three are in a prison hospital, SIS said.

The defendants are charged with hostage taking (articles 218 of the criminal code), seizure of buildings, vehicles and  communication facilities (article 235), illegal purchase, sale, storage, transportation or carrying of weapons, ammunition, explosives or explosive devices (article 235).

The Special Investigative Service said that based on the available and incoming evidence,  the actions of the defendants will be individualized and the legal assessment of their acts will be based on the nature of their possible involvement in the alleged crime, the degree of social danger of their acts and the severity of their consequences.

The SIS statement notes that in case of  grounds and conditions provided by law, persons who voluntarily renounce the crime, may be exempted from criminal liability if their actually committed acts do not contain elements of crime.

The Special Investigation Service also said that members of the group were arrested to prevent them from inappropriate behavior during the initial stages of the investigation and to ensure the normal course of criminal proceedings.

An offshoot of Armenia's Founding Parliament opposition movement, composed of many veterans of the Nagorno-Karabakh War, seized a police station building in Yerevan on July 17 and held it for two weeks. The group demanded the resignation of the president of the country and the release of their leader Zhirayr Sefilyan, arrested earlier for illegal possession of weapons.

On July 31 the group laid down their arms and surrendered to the authorities. The gunmen had held four police officers hostage for a week before releasing them unharmed. They later seized four members of an ambulance crew, but the last two were allowed to leave on July 30.

The gunmen killed one officer and wounded several others in their initial attack. Police accused the gunmen of killing a second officer on July 30 as he sat in a vehicle away from the compound. -0-
