YEREVAN, January 19. /ARKA/. The eighth round of negotiations to form a new legal framework for relations between Armenia and the European Union (EU) took place on January 18 in Yerevan, the press service of the Armenian Foreign Ministry said today.
It said the Armenian delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Karen Nazaryan; the European Union’s delegation was led by Luc Devigne, Director of the Eastern Partnership, Russia, the OSCE and Territorial Cooperation at the European External Action Service.
During the meeting the sides discussed those chapters of the agreement, which are about political issues, as well as general, institutional and final provisions. The Armenian ministry said the parties achieved mutual understanding on a number of issues.
Summing up the talks, the sides also exchanged information on the results of discussions on sectoral and trade issues, and agreed on the timing of the next round of negotiations, which will take place in Brussels.
Armenia and the EU launched talks on a new framework agreement on December 7, 2015 after EU Foreign Affairs Council authorized the European Commission and the High Representative to open negotiations on a new legal basis for relations with Armenia on October 13.
Armenia and the EU were supposed to sign the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) at a 2013 November Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius but on September 3 President Sargsyan announced that the country was going to become part of the Russian-led Customs Union. The new agreement will replace the current agreement on partnership and cooperation between the EU and Armenia. -0-
