YEREVAN, March 25. /ARKA/. Turkish Parliament Speaker Jemil Cicek arrived Tuesday in Washington in a bid to prevent passage by U.S. lawmakers of a resolution condemning Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Empire, according to Hurriyet Newspaper
The draft resolution was proposed last week by four Republican and Democrat congressmen, who think the resolution, if adopted, would improve relations between Armenia and the United States through admission of Armenian Genocide fact by Turkey.
The resolution is supported by 46 congressmen. Attempts to pass similar resolutions in the Congress have repeatedly failed before.
Cicek met with Speaker of the United States House of Representatives John Boehner and other congressmen.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavushoglu is expected to travel to the United States in April, RIA Novosti reports. Armenian genocide was the first genocide committed in XX century.
Turkey rejects the accusation of massacres and the killing of one and a half million Armenians during World War I.
The fact of the Armenian genocide is recognized by many countries, particularly by Uruguay, Russia, France, Lithuania, most of the U.S. states, as well as by the parliaments of Greece, Cyprus, Argentina, Belgium, Wales, National Council of Switzerland, Common House of Canada, the Seym of Poland and lower house of Italian parliament. ----0----
