YEREVAN, August 19. /ARKA/. Armenian law-enforcement authorities have arrested two more persons on charges of using violence against journalists during the dispersal of a demonstration held in support of Sasna Tsrer, an opposition group of gunmen who had seized a Yerevan police compound on July 17, the Special Investigative Service (SIS) said today.

According to SIS, the two persons are charged with abuse of power with the use of violence, arms or special devices and obstructing the professional activities of journalists.

According to journalists, they were attacked and beaten up by a group of men armed with sticks late on July 29 as riot police forced demonstrators to flee the Sari Tagh neighborhood near the besieged police compound. Armenia’s Special Investigative Service said earlier 20 reporters and cameramen were injured in the violence.

Later president Serzh Sargsyan publicly apologized to the journalists assaulted in Sari Tagh urging them to “forget about those incidents,” saying that the authorities will draw “all necessary conclusions” from the violence. -0-
