YEREVAN, July 3. /ARKA/. The first anti-corruption conference discussing fulfilment of Armenia’s corruption-combating international commitments has opened in Yerevan.

In his opening remarks Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan referred to the anti-corruption principles Armenia has adopted, namely, corruption combating must be transparent and the results must be visible.

However, we need certain instruments and a specified working style to set and implement clear measures, the premier said.

“The first phase of the anti-corruption program envisaging legislative changes is over now. The second stage requires application of these laws and this is the most essential phase,” Sargsyan said.

The premier also stressed the importance of the government’s accountability to society both for decision making and reporting the results.

“As we have said before we strongly encourage the involvement of public organizations, including the opposition representatives whom we have invited to take part in the activity of the monitoring commission affiliated with the anticorruption commission,” Sargsyan said.

This will allow controlling the activity of the government and get directly involved in the program implementation processes.

“It is impossible to imagine a healthy society without healthy and strong opposition, and we are working now to create favourable conditions for the opposition’s participation in all the programs, including the anticorruption one,” the premier said.

Tigran Sargsyan also stressed the importance of forming an atmosphere of intolerance against corruption in the country.

“Each of us must start this process from himself. Our actions will be more productive if we start fighting corruption from ourselves and from our surrounding,” Sargsyan said.

The premier believes corruption fighting also implies mentality and behaviour changes, and every citizen must display intolerance against any expression of corruption. --0--
