26.04.2008, 21:37
The scientific sector will be in the center of attention in Armenia, RA President Serge Sargsyan stated at the annual general meeting of the Armenian National Academy of Science (ANAS).

YEREVAN, April 25. /ARKA/. The scientific sector will be in the center of attention in Armenia, RA President Serge Sargsyan stated at the annual general meeting of the Armenian National Academy of Science (ANAS).

“We intend to keep both science and the activities of the National Academy of Sciences in the center of our attention,” S. Sargsyan said.
He pointed out the Armenian people’s special attitude to science and culture, and the authorities’ task has been to create necessary conditions for making full use of this advantage.

“At the same time, scientists’ task is to raise the rating of science and encourage young scientists and convince them that Armenia’s scientific potential can be a stimulus to our people’s well-being,” the President said.

In this context, S. Sargsyan emphasized the importance of combining the scientific and intellectual potential of all Armenians.

“Time has come for the Academy to find means of impartial assessment of each scientist’s achievements and contribution in conformity with international standards. The status of local doctor or academician is not always acceptable abroad, and, in this context, we need to elaborate relevant criteria,” S. Sargsyan said.

The President also pointed out the necessity for using the Armenian Diaspora’s potential not only in the aspect of funding, but also as a source of “inexhaustible potential”.

The entire Armenian people must be proud of ANAS, and this must first of all concern Armenian studies, without being restricted to it, Sargsyan said.

The RA President agreed with the necessity for establishing new ANAS institutes, particularly institutes to deal with information technologies, Nagorno-Karabakh problem, modern society.

“I agree that new institutes may appear, but it is desirable that they be formed as a result of optimization of other institutes, the ones not properly using their potential,” Sargsyan said. P.T. –0--
