YEREVAN, March 18. /ARKA/. The towns of Vanadzor and Alaverdi in the northern province of Lori and the town of Hrazdan in the central province of Kotayk were the most polluted towns in Armenia in 2018.

A study of air pollution conducted by the Ministry of Nature Protection, found excessive quantities of pollutants in these towns, which were more that the annual average allowable concentration.

The study revealed that Alaverdi was the most polluted town of Armenia last year. In particular, the  dustiness rate exceeded the norm 1.8 times, and excessive quantity of sulfur dioxide content in air was also recorded.

Sulfur dioxide is one of the main gases polluting the atmosphere. Contamination by sulfur compounds  released into the atmosphere when coal, oil and natural gas are burned represents the greatest danger to public health, as well as metal smelting and sulfuric acid production.

Exceeding quantity of sulfur dioxide was also recorded in the town of Vanadzor by 1.6 times. In the town of Hrazdan, Kotayk region, the recorded dustiness rate was 1.3 times higher than the permissible amount. In Yerevan and in other towns embraced by the study the quantity of dust and other substances in the air was  within the normal range. -0-
