YEREVAN, May 24. /ARKA/. Aram Simonyan, the head of the Yerevan State University, resigned on Thursday. He is quoted by the press office of the university as saying that his resignation was prompted mainly by the leaden atmosphere created ahead of the university’s centenary.
“Tension over the university is not easing, but it is event escalating,” he said. “The country’s authorities accuse me of being stuck to this seat for staying in office for long. It is ridiculous. I have never been stuck to the seat.” He said he can answer every question.
Simonyan doesn’t feel guilty. He said he found the education ministry’s policy unacceptable. He also feels insulted because not a single official has congratulated him on the 100th anniversary of the university. He has not received congratulation even from the chairman of the university’s Board of Trustees.
He said that even the criminal case opened against him over abuses found at the university can’t suppress his belief in the univ
