YEREVAN, April 18. /ARKA/. Armenian armed forces are set to have sport companies, Defense Minister David Tonoyan said on April 17 in response to a question from lawmaker Arsen Julfalakyan from My Step faction, who is a world champion in Greco-Roman wrestling.

"Creating sports units in the armed forces of Armenia is a necessity, but I want to remind you that the athletes who have achieved certain success are exempted from compulsory military service, taking into account that the age suitable for becoming an athlete coincides with the service age in the army," he said.

According to him, at the moment regulations for creating sports units are being developed, and sports companies are likely to be created during the spring conscription season in 2019.

Tonoyan recalled that the armed forces have already a cyber-company, consisting of highly-skilled IT specialists who meet the criteria established by the Ministry of Defense, a scientific company for engineers and music units consisting of gifted musicians...

“For the activities of these units, all the necessary conditions have already been created. There were no opportunities to create a sport company. In the near future, we will create such conditions for our athletes,” the minister said.

According to the current legislation, Armenian men between the ages of 18 and 27 are called up for compulsory military service in the army. -0--
