Armenian Prosecutor General Office proposes to tighten punishment for violation of traffic rules
YEREVAN, July 23. /ARKA/. Armenian Prosecutor General’s Office came up Monday with a legislative initiative – it proposes to tighten punishment for violation of traffic rules, the press service of the office reports.

The initiative was prompted by a study that showed that traffic accidents are becoming dangerously commonplace in the country.

In particular, 700 traffic offences were reported in 2016, while in 2017 as many as 972 cases were reported and in 2018 already 1,283.

This means that the number of traffic accidents has grown 32% in 2017 and 2018.

Over the first six months of this year 685 traffic offences have been recorded in Armenia – 24.1% more than at the same period a year earlier. Compared with 2017, in 2018 the number of deaths caused by traffic accidents rose 25% or by 44 cases, and in the first half of this year a 16% year-on-year increase (15 cases more) was reported.

Taking into account the international experience, the prosecutor general’s office has worked out a package of legislative changes and has submitted it to the justice ministry.

The package implies a wide range of punishment degrees – from imposing fines to stripping offenders of their driving licenses and sentencing them to prison for up to five years.

The proposed amendments to the law will contribute to prevention of traffic accidents and protection of human health and life. -0---
