Hepatitis C-infected patients in Kajaran receive antiviral treatment
YEREVAN, July 27. / ARKA /. Eight people, who were infected with hepatitis C at Kajaran medical center in the south of Armenia are receiving antiviral treatment, Hasmik Ghazinyan, head of the department of hepatology at Nork Infectious Diseases Hospital, told a news conference today.

In early January eight people who had been hospitalized at Kajaran hospital were reportedly found to contract the virus from contaminated instruments.

The ministry of health had to set up an ad hoc commission to scrutinize the health facility and identify  the measures used to prevent spread of infectious diseases.

According to Hasmik Ghazinyan,  the treatment of all the eight people is paid by the government. The authorities in the Syunik region launched a criminal investigation for breaches of health rules and safety standards.

According to Ghazinyan, the infected people are receiving treatment according to international standards, and there is a strong hope that soon they will be perfectly healthy.

"If years ago hepatitis C was considered an incurable disease, nowadays the situation has changed and recovery is possible", said Ghazinyan.

Hepatitis C is an infectious disease affecting primarily the liver, caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The infection is often asymptomatic, but chronic infection can lead to scarring of the liver and ultimately to cirrhosis, which is generally apparent after many years. – 0-
