YEREVAN, December 11. /ARKA/. Poverty rate in Armenia is expected to slash significantly amid the projected GDP growth in 2012, IMF resident representative Guillermo Tolosa said Tuesday.
According to the latest data for 2011, the poverty rate in Armenia dropped, but still it is high, he said. In 2011 the economic growth was not so touchable, that is why the poverty rate didn’t decline, according to Tolosa.
According to Tolosa, in 2012 Armenia will post quite higher economic growth, thus, lower poverty rate.
Armenia’s GDP posted 4.6% in 2011, and in 2012 it is expected at 7%.
According to the National Statistical Service of Armenia, the poverty rate in Armenia stood at 35% in 2011. Transfers make up the highest share in household’s income in Armenia. Social transfers’ share in the GDP is not so high though. However, the poverty rate will rise to 53.2% if these transfers are stopped, the shortage of consumption relative to the poverty rate may up from 7.9% to 21.2% on average.—0-
