Armenia's environment ministry suggests penalizing motorists for driving without catalytic converters
YEREVAN, July 7. /ARKA/. Armenia's Ministry of Environment has unveiled a draft law, posted on e-draft unified website for publication of draft laws, which calls for penalizing motorists for driving cars with removed catalytic converters.

A catalytic converter is a device used to reduce the emissions from an internal combustion engine, used in most modern day automobiles and vehicles.

According to the ministry, the  draft law was prompted by significant damage to environment caused by cars used without catalytic converter.

It also says that many motorists remove catalytic converters not because of their malfunction, but in order to gain profit, since this part contains expensive metals such as platinum and gold.

The draft law says since the average market value of a catalytic converter is 300 thousand drams (about $620), the amount of the fine cannot be less than that  amount so that citizens have no opportunity to benefit from its removal and sale.
It is worth noting that the draft law fails to note that most of  vehicles in Armenia use gas as fuel, which significantly reduces the level of emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere.

According to some surveys,  66% of citizens who have read the draft law are opposed to its adoption. --0--
