Solar power plants in Armenia generate more electricity than Metsamor NPP

YEREVAN, April 19. /ARKA/. Armenian government is seeking to expand renewable energy sources, Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Minister Gnel Sanosyan said today, adding that for the first time since major repairs the Metsamor NPP has reached 100% capacity.
"Regarding renewable energy the capacity of our plants has grown to 450 MW. To make it easier to understand our nuclear power plant has a capacity of 405 MW. That is, the capacity of our solar power plants is already approximately the same. Of those, 205 plants have a capacity of up to 5 MW. The solar plants have generated 170% more electricity in 2022 compared to 2021," he said.
According to the National Statistical Committee, Armenia produced about 1.7 billion kWh of electricity in January-February 2023, which is 0.2% less than in the same period of 2022.
Thermal power plants accounted for the largest share of the generated electricity - 55% or 830.7 million kWh. The Metsamor nuclear power plant (28.2%) produced 608.1 million kWh and HPPs generated 13.3% or 217.8 million kWh.
The solar power plants (share - 3. %) produced 21.5 mln. kWh of electricity during the reporting period (2.2 times more), and the wind power plants produced 0.8 mln. kWh -0-.
