YEREVAN, February 20. /ARKA/. Last Friday the head of Armenia’s Main Civil Aviation Department Sergey Avetisyan had a meeting with representatives of the border troops at the Yerevan international airport Zvartnots to look into what kind of problems may arise for Russian citizens visiting Armenia with their internal passports and how they can be solved.

Under a decision taken by the Armenian government in January 2017, citizens of the Russian Federation can visit Armenia with their internal passports. The decision is supposed to encourage Russian tourists to visit Armenia. According to some estimates, only 10% of Russian citizens have passports for traveling abroad.

Representatives of the border guards said that border checkpoints at Zvartnots airport in Yerevan and Shirak airport in Armenia’s second-largest town of Gyumri are technically ready to receive Russian citizens traveling to Armenia with their internal passports.

Armenian prime minister Karen Karapetyan said on January 24 during his official visit to Russia that all procedures for the entry of Russian citizens to Armenia with internal passports will be in place before  March 1, 2017.

Currently Armenia has two operating airports – Zvartnots in Yerevan and Shirak in Gyumri, both run by Armenia - International Airports company in accordance with the 30-year concession management agreement signed with the Armenian government in 2001. Armenia - International Airports is owned by Eduardo Eurnekian. -0
