YEREVAN, March 30. /ARKA/. Armenian minister of agriculture Ignaty Arakelyan said today that two companies are importing fertilizers and 3,300 tons of nitrogenous fertilizers have been already distributed to farmers at the price of 7,000 drams per a bag. Of this price 1000 drams are subsidized by the government for each bag.
This year the government has earmarked about 900 million drams for purchase of fertilizers, down from 2.1 billion drams, projected by the 2017 budget. As a result, about 1.2 billion drams will be saved, the minister said. He said also that about 106 million drams have been allocated for the purchase of pesticides for pest control of orchards.
The minister refuted reports that "harmful" seeds are imported to Armenia from Turkey, saying that seeds are imported only from Russia. In his words, 1,710 tons of seeds have been imported for spring sowing, worth about 587 million drams, of which 280 million were subsidized by the government.
He said also that vaccines for vaccination of cattle have been imported as well. The cost of the entire program is about 1 billion drams, of which 456 million drams is the cost of vaccines, and about 593 million will be spent on the conduct of vaccination.
The minister said that a leasing program has also started, enabling farmers to purchase agricultural machinery on subsidized loans. -0-
