YEREVAN, August 12. /ARKA/. A 3-year program to take stock of livestock in Armenia, designed with the assistance from the Austrian and Swiss development agencies, will kick off in 2017, deputy minister of agriculture Armen Harutyunyan said today.

He noted that with the assistance from various international organizations the authorities have already implemented a series of development programs, having also upgraded veterinary services, slaughterhouses and laboratories.

"Today, one of the priority tasks is tagging and giving numbers to each farm animal. The aim is to control the movement of meat products and to improve their quality and safety", said Harutyunyan.

According to him, after the introduction of the new system, farmers will not be able to sell the meat of unregistered livestock, and all meat across the country will be given corresponding marking.

"This will also enable us to quickly identify and locate pockets of possible diseases, and after the introduction of the insurance system in agriculture - to increase the guarantees of farmers", said Harutyunyan.

The initiative to register and give numbers to farm animals belongs to the State Food Safety Service. All farm animals will have special tags fixed to their ears containing encoded information. A pilot project to register and number livestock was conducted already in Vayots Dzor province covering about 23 thousand cattle. -0-
