12.02.2016, 16:00
Speaking at an online news conference on February 11, U.S. ambassador to Armenia, Richard Mills, said the Armenian economy has reached a level of development and reform that makes it attractive to American investments.

YEREVAN, February 12. /ARKA/. Speaking at an online news conference on February 11, U.S. ambassador to Armenia, Richard Mills, said the Armenian economy has reached a level of development and reform that makes it attractive to American investments.

The bulk of the 2015 U.S. investments in Armenia stemmed from the $250 million sale of the Vorotan hydroelectric complex, the largest in Armenia, to a US-based company ContourGlobal.

Asked to comment on US president Obama’s remarks that last year’s record-high amount of U.S. investments in the Armenian economy is “only the beginning” of closer U.S.-Armenian economic, the ambassador said  president Obama’s remarks reflected the Embassy’s and the U.S. government’s priorities in Armenia: increasing American investments and trade.

In that regard the US diplomat also recalled the signing in May 2015 of the U.S.-Armenian Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA).

According to the ambassador, Armenia could become also a “platform” for U.S.-Iranian commercial relations following the lifting of international sanctions against Iran.

The diplomat also noted that one of the main tasks of the US embassy in Armenia is  to help attract large amounts of investment. This task, according to him, is being carried out along with Armenian government’s efforts to reduce corruption level in the country. He said also it t is important to ensure a level playing field for business players.-0-
