YEREVAN, October 2. /ARKA/. Ameria company said Tuesday it had started a full-scale research of various spheres of Armenian economy.

“The first research was conducted in Yerevan in food and other retail goods. The research showed preferences of consumers, expenses, and assessed supermarkets’ network and other outlets,” the press release states.

According to Ameria’s study, supermarkets sell 39% of food, alcohol, tobacco and household goods. Of this index 30% is sold by the four major supermarkets of Yerevan. Yerevan’s supermarkets sell 63.1% of alcohol beverage.

Agricultural markets buy fruits and vegetables making up 28% of the total agricultural retail trade. Small stores sell 30.3% and 29.7% of bread and tobacco goods respectively.

In its study, Ameria focused on supermarket attendance depending on the location, as well as the main criteria of choosing this or that product. Supermarkets were classified in accordance with prices-quality, service, variety of products, etc.
Thus, 42.3% of the population makes daily purchases in supermarkets, and 41%- in small stores. The rest of the outlets classified on daily attendance have the following sequence: large groceries, stalls, street shops, markets, large hardware stores and shopping centers.

Variety of products, service quality, loyalty, convenient location are the main factors for customers to choose supermarkets. The three main criteria for selecting food are quality, price and freshness; for household goods- quality, price and past experience.

Deputy head of Ameria Consulting Service Department Karen Martirosyan said the main competition at the market of necessity goods is reported between supermarkets.

He noted that retail trade networks changed the culture of purchase and use of goods by the country’s population. On the one hand it can have a positive impact for consumers, as quality, freshness, storage conditions and service will be in the limelight, but on the other hand it can influence the inflation at the consumer market, according to him.

Such analyses may interest retail and wholesale trade representatives: the information can be used for more effective organization of their business, assessment of strong and weak sides, identifying preferences and demand of the population. The research may be also useful for banks, financial institutions, state bodies, etc. The research results will be discussed at the round table with participation of representatives of researching companies, banking and finance sector, experts.
