Armenia abolishes double taxation on income with Japan

YEREVAN, September 12. /ARКА/. The National Assembly of Armenia approved the Convention aimed at eliminating double taxation of income and preventing fiscal evasion with Japan during its session on Thursday.
As noted by Deputy Finance Minister Arman Poghosyan, this initiative reinstates the framework for legal relations that eliminate double taxation. More advantageous tax conditions than those outlined in national legislation are mutually established for residents of both nations. A stable and predictable tax environment is being created.
In certain instances, tax rates lower than those set by existing national legislation are anticipated, particularly when a specific investment threshold is surpassed. It is expected that a solid foundation for mutual cooperation between the tax authorities of both countries will be established.
The convention was signed on December 26, 2024, in Yerevan, and it sets forth, based on the principle of reciprocity, the conditions and rates of taxation for the primary types of income - dividends, interest, and royalties - in the country where the income is received for the business sectors of the contracting states.
On May 8, 2025, the convention received approval from the Armenian government. According to Vice-Chairman of the House of Councilors of the National Assembly of Japan, Hiroyuki Nagahama, the agreement has already been ratified by both chambers of the Japanese parliament.-0-
