Armenia Extends Tax Exemptions for Newly Imported Electric Vehicles

YEREVAN, October 16. /ARКА/. At a meeting on Thursday, the Armenian government approved amendments to the Tax Code regarding tax exemptions for imported electric vehicles.

"The draft law provides for an extension of the current VAT exemptions for the import of large, medium, and small buses, passenger cars, motorcycles, and mopeds with electric engines for another year—until December 31, 2026," Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan said.

He recalled that this exemption was introduced in 2019 and is having a positive impact on the import and use of electric vehicles.

He also noted that Armenia also has a zero customs duty on electric vehicles imported from third countries.

"In particular, by decision of the Eurasian Economic Union Armenia was given a quota for imported electric vehicles of 7,000 units in 2022 and 8,000 units in 2023-2025, for which customs duties are not levied," the minister said.

As a result, the number of imported electric vehicles increased to 9,635 units in 2023 (a 75% increase compared to 2022) and to 11,793 units in 2024 (a 22% increase). By comparison, 17.6 times more electric vehicles were imported in 2024 than in 2019, Papoyan noted.

"It should be noted that, according to data from the State Revenue Committee, from the beginning of 2025 through October 14, 2025, three electric buses, 14,888 cars (3,000 more than last year), and 2,634 motorcycles and mopeds were imported," Papoyan reported.

He also noted that the proposal is to extend the exemption only to electric vehicles manufactured in 2024 and later, which is important not only from an economic perspective but also from an environmental standpoint.-0-
