YEREVAN, November 24. /ARКА/. Armenia underscores the significance of a strong, robust, and transparent diamond certification system, as stated by Deputy Economy Minister Edgar Zakharyan.

Speaking at the Kimberley Process Ministerial Meeting held in Dubai on November 17-21, Zakharyan highlighted that Armenia participates in all phases of the diamond value chain—from importation to processing and retail.

The Deputy Minister reiterated Yerevan's firm stance on discussions regarding the broadened definition of "conflict diamonds" and the necessity of a consensus format as the foundation for decision-making within the Kimberley Process.

The meeting stressed that every action taken must contribute to preserving the integrity, reliability, and technical nature of the Kimberley Process.

"Armenia remains a constructive, responsible, and engaged partner, prepared to collaborate with all participants to uphold the unity and effectiveness of the process," the Ministry of Economy conveyed in a statement.

About the Kimberley Process

The Kimberley Process is an international certification scheme that regulates the trade in rough diamonds. Established in 2003, it aims to prevent the flow of conflict diamonds and safeguard the legitimate trade in rough diamonds.

Conflict diamonds (also referred to as "blood diamonds") are rough diamonds utilized by rebel movements or their affiliates to finance armed conflicts intended to undermine legitimate governments.

Participants in the Kimberley Process consist of states and regional organizations authorized to trade rough diamonds, including 85 major diamond-producing, exporting, and importing countries.-0-
