YEREVAN, February 25. /ARKA/. The governments of Armenia and Iran are negotiating now the extension of the electricity supply agreement  until 2040, Armenian Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Hakob Vardanyan said today, when speaking at an event on energy security of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).

He said today Armenia exports electricity largely to Iran under the agreement on mutual electricity flows, which is valid until 2026.

He said the sides are discussing now the possible extension of the agreement until 2040. In his words, Iran is ready to buy as much electricity as Armenia is capable to sell.

He also said when the construction of the third power transmission line between the countries is over, Armenian exports of electricity to Iran will grow to 1200 MW.

The construction of third high-voltage 400 kV transmission line is funded by the Iranian government. Iran ships natural gas to Armenia under "Gas for Electricity" program. The Iranian gas is not sold to households or enterprises - it is converted into electricity by the Yerevan thermal power plant and much of it is shipped back to Iran- 3 kWh for one cubic meters of gas.  The gas pipeline between Armenia and Iran was commissioned in 2007. -0-
